Born in Holland 1941. Because of the economic situation after the war I
had to go to work at 14 and half years old. Because of my age they
stuck
me in a bakery (I had no choice).
Two years later I got my passport and sailors log book on the sly, and
went through all the medicals to get on a ship.
Then you had to have parents permission. After being faced with the
"fait accompli", they relented, signed the consent form and let me go
to sea.
I had to hand over 90% of my wages over to them.(automatically send to
them by the company, it was the law). My sister went to emigrate to
Canada in 1958 and I wanted to go along, but did not get permission to
do so.
One year later, when my ship had docked in Oran- Algeria a mate said
that he was going to join
the Legion. Up to that time I had never heard of the Legion because any
news in the newspaper about French troops in Indo China and Algeria,
never did mention the Legion. Even to this day they only mention
"French troops" whether the Legion is involved or not.
Anyway, I said to him, well I am going with you. At the Caserne in
Oran, the sentinel told me to get the hell back to my ship if had any
brains, but I thought it was a fine way to get away from the
control of my parents. Then at that time, you had to be 21 years of age
before you were considered of legal age and could do anything on your
own.
Six months before my contract was up, the Legion offered to send me to
Caporal training and then after six months to
Sergeants training, if I signed up for another three years. I would
have done it if it had not been that my parents had also emigrated to
Canada (1963).
I insisted that I first paid them at least one visit. So after staying
one year in Holland, I went with the intention to pay them a visit and
then sign up again in the Legion. As it turned out, I liked Canada so
much that I became a Canadian citizen.
I worked for about a year for my brother in law and after that I
started my own Construction Company. Mostly house construction and
renovating. It became later an incorporated business and started to do
really well when I had my accident in 1982.
I fell 19 to 20 feet on top of a concrete footing and some construction
material. I broke my neck (quadriplegic), had internal injuries and a
severe cerebral concussion, which left me with a severe short term
memory loss.
I use one finger and one
pencil to type and I drive my Van/Automobile with hand controls.
BIOGRAPHIE RESUMEE :
.
